TRAINER:
- John de Miranda, Ed.M.
CEO of Stepping Stone of San Diego
Faces and Voices of Recovery, Board Member Pacific Southwest Region
Executive Director of the National Association on Alcohol, Drugs and Disability, Inc.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
- For the past several decades the national response to prevent, intervene and treat substance use disorders has evolved both interpersonal and ecological approaches. Increasingly we have come to understand how personal interrelationships and the interaction between individuals and their environments increase or decrease the risk of alcohol and drug related problems.
This course is designed to engage participants in understanding and appreciating the ongoing evolution of prevention, treatment and recovery strategies that respond to community level alcohol and other drug problems.
FORMAT AND PURPOSE:
- The primary objective of the course is to provide participants with a basic understanding of a recovery orientation in addressing community alcohol and drug problems. The course will address issues of policy as well as clinical practice, and expose participants to the latest thinking from leaders in what is increasingly being referred to as The New Recovery Movement.
- At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to return to their organizations and communities prepared to initiate strategies consistent with a recovery-oriented system of care, and to support local recovery community initiatives and activities.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
- The course is intended for practicing alcohol and drug prevention and treatment professionals or those intending to pursue such academic and experiential training. It is also directed at administrators of alcohol and drug prevention and treatment programs as well as policy makers and government officials.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of the 12-hour course, participants will:
- Understand the evolution of recovery-oriented thought from the early days of the 12-step movement to the present.
- Have a comprehensive knowledge of the individuals and organizations that comprise The New Recovery Movement.
- Be able to articulate key elements of and the research underpinnings for a recovery-oriented system of care.
- Understand how a client-centered recovery-oriented approach can be applied in community prevention and treatment settings.
